The Warlord by Mike Grell Omnibus Vol. 1
Part of the DC Omnibus guide — every release, in reading order
Enter the lost world of the Warlord, in this omnibus collection of legendary writer and artist Mike Grell's revered sword-and-sorcery epic!
In 1975, DC made one of its most notable expansions beyond the world of superheroes with the introduction of the Warlord—a new fantasy hero created by writer and artist Mike Grell, later distinguished for his character-redefining work Green Arrow: The Longbow Hunters.
Lt. Colonel Travis Morgan of the United States Air Force is attacked while on a reconnaissance mission over Russia. Fleeing toward the arctic circle, he is forced to abandon his dying aircraft over the Yukon—and parachutes through a swirling mist into the strange and unrecognizable land of Skartaris!
In Warlord by Mike Grell Omnibus Vol. 1, readers can journey to Skartaris and read the very first appearance of Grell's famous creation, along with the first 50 issues of the Warlord series, which stands as one of the most influential comics runs of its era.
This volume collects 1st Issue Special #8, Warlord #1-50, and Amazing World of DC Comics #12.

Period-appropriate paper
The lightweight, matte, old-comics-style paper DC has been printing its classic-era omnibus reprints on since 2026. DC's own solicitations call it “period appropriate paper”; collectors call it Norbrite.
What it actually is
A high-bulk, uncoated groundwood book paper — the same family of stock trade paperbacks and novels are printed on — instead of the coated gloss or matte sheet most collected editions use. The Norbrite name comes from a NORPAC paper line made from thermomechanical (groundwood) pulp: roughly 80 brightness, about 52–67 gsm, and 400–570 pages per inch. Standard coated omnibus paper runs closer to 90–100 gsm at 510–600 pages per inch.
What that means in hand
- Lighter book: the sheet weighs roughly a third less than coated stock.
- Thicker spine: it is bulkier per sheet, so the same page count needs more shelf space.
- Matte, low-glare pages with softer colour — closer to how the original newsprint comics looked.
- Groundwood paper carries lignin, so like the comics it imitates it can tone over the years, especially in sunlight.
Who likes it
Fans praise the comfortable reading weight and the period feel on vintage art. Detractors find the colours muted and the stock less premium than gloss — and it costs shelf space. Neither camp is wrong; it is a taste call, which is why you can filter by it.
Check the printing, not just the book
Paper is chosen per printing. A 2026 reprint may be on period paper while the first printing of the same book is on coated stock. Each printing carries its own badge, and a catalog card names which printing(s) qualify when only some do. No badge means we have not recorded period-appropriate paper for that printing.
