How Long Until a Series Gets an Omnibus?

Based on our analysis of 276 modern omnibuses (collecting material from 2000 onward), the median wait is about 3 years from the final collected issue to the omnibus release.

The average is higher — around 4.8 years — because some runs wait over a decade before getting the omnibus treatment. But if your run is popular, expect 1–3 years.

Marvel tends to collect runs more quickly than DC, especially popular creator-driven runs. Based on 215 qualifying Marvel omnibuses:

High-profile runs like Hickman's Avengers, Aaron's Thor, or Fraction's Hawkeye often see an omnibus within 6–18 months of wrapping up.

DC's omnibus program started later (2007 vs. Marvel's 2005) and has produced fewer volumes. The wait time skews longer:

DC's fastest organic turnarounds tend to be crossover events or short prestige runs. Their longer median reflects a smaller, more selective omnibus program.

Not really. The median wait has actually increased over the past decade, from about 1–2 years (2009–2012) to 4–5 years (2023–2026).

This does not mean publishers are slower — it means they are now going back to collect older runs that were never omnibused during the early years of the program. In 2025–2026, you will find both a 1-year-old run getting its omnibus and a 14-year-old run finally being collected.

Some omnibuses arrive shockingly fast — usually high-profile creator runs that were clearly planned for collection from the start:

If a modern run just wrapped up (2022 or later) and it was well-received critically or commercially, the most likely window for an omnibus announcement is 1–3 years after the final issue.

If a run is 5+ years old with no announcement, it may still happen — but you are in "long tail" territory. Monitor solicitations and do not hold your breath.

Runs from lesser-known creators or lower-selling titles are the least likely to get omnibused quickly, though Marvel's expanding catalog suggests even these may eventually get their turn.

We analyzed 276 omnibuses from our database that collect runs starting in 2000 or later, using Grand Comics Database (GCD) cover dates cross-referenced with first-printing release dates.

The "gap" is measured from the last collected issue's cover date to the omnibus first printing release date. This gives a conservative estimate — the real-world perception may feel shorter since announcement typically precedes release by 4–6 months.
